As the winter chill settles in, maintaining both mental and physical health becomes paramount. The season brings its unique challenges, from the biting cold to the early darkness, but fear not! We’ve curated a collection of winter wellness tips to help you thrive during these colder months.
Stay Warm, Stay Healthy.
Winter’s cold temperatures can impact your health, but there are simple and cost-effective ways to stay warm.
It all starts with wrapping up warm layering clothes when indoors and enjoying hot drinks and meals.
Cozy essentials like warm slippers and electric blankets can keep you warm in addition to taking practical measures like changing curtains to heavier thicker ones and using draught excluders. Planning for potential challenges, like ice and snows, is also crucial. Ensure you have enough supplies and support systems in place. Support systems like friends and family that you can keep in touch with and reach out to of you need anything.
Heating bills are up, and it maybe that you need extra help.

Eat Nutrient-Packed Winter Meals.
A well-balanced diet is key to a resilient immune system. Embrace the season with hearty, homemade meals filled with fruits and vegetables. My favourites include soups, stews, curries, and casseroles packed with winter vegetables. Frozen or tinned fruits and veggies are excellent alternatives when fresh produce is scarce. At this time of year there are lots of goodies about so its extra import to focus on eating healthily to ward off winter snacking, advanced meal preparation and mindful shopping for a variety of nourishing foods.

Winter Exercise Motivation.
Winter may tempt you to hibernate, but staying active is crucial for both physical and mental health. My Mum used to say there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing, she had a point. Invest in waterproof gear and warm clothing to motivate outdoor activities. Walking with a friend, signing up for local leisure centres, or finding online exercise routines are excellent ways to stay fit.
CREST has a walking group, we would love you to come along.
Prefer to stay at home? There are loads of great YouTube exercise programmes, proving that staying active doesn’t always require a gym membership. Remember, any movement is better than none, so find activities you enjoy, whether it’s a home workout or a daily dance or ‘potter’ around the house.
Nurturing Your Winter Mental Health.
Winter can be challenging mentally, but building gratitude practices and social connections can make a significant difference. Taking note of the little things, the small joys, and maintaining a gratitude journal can lift your spirits.
Actively seeking social interactions, even brief walks or conversations, can combat feelings of loneliness. Joining groups or classes, engaging in hobbies, and incorporating light therapy (getting out into the daylight) into your routine are additional strategies to boost mental well-being during the winter months.
We have many classes and groups you can join including a Women’s Chi and Chat Club on a Monday at 11 am, Swimming Classes on a Tuesday, book club on a Wednesday Men’s Chi and Chat is also starting on Tuesday the 19th of December at 11 am.
